Patron Blended Learning Plans and Tools – Digital Literacy and ELL (Public Access Technology Community – PAT-C)

Learn how to create blended learning programs for patrons on digital literacy, ELL, and GED preparation using the Learner Web platform. Patrons can develop personal learning plans and then access online and face-to-face support to achieve their goals. Learner Web can also be used to train library staff, tutors, volunteers.

We’ll start with an overview of the Learner Web learning support system and training content. You’ll get a sense for how the platform is being used by public libraries and how it’s evolving with grants/awards from IMLS, NTIA (BTOP), and the Next Generation Learning Challenges (EDUCAUSE). Richmond Public Library will share how they use Learner Web for digital literacy, ELL, and GED preparation—and how they partner with other organizations. Hear about what works and lessons learned. We’ll wrap up with comments from the California State Library about their recent LSTA investment in expanding the use of Learner Web by other library systems.

Putting the Public Back in Public Library (Web Junction)

While public libraries are generally viewed as inclusive spaces, there are large segments of community that do not use them. Beginning in 2004, four large urban library systems from across Canada - Vancouver, Toronto, Regina and Halifax Public Libraries - spent four years working in socially excluded communities, to determine how to make public library services relevant to the needs of underserved communities. As a result, it was discovered that when communities are involved in the identification, development and delivery of library services, there can be an exhilarating effect. Since the conclusion of the highly successful Working Together Project (2004-2008), public libraries from across Canada have integrated community-led approaches and techniques. This webinar, brought to you in collaboration with Library Journal, will discuss the major outcomes of the project and provide examples of how the bringing this approach into library service planning makes libraries even more relevant to local needs.

The Montana Memory Project Webinar Series: Optical Character Recognition with Tina Kirkham – Tech Support Specialist, Montana Memory Project (Montana State Library)

Optical Character Recognition (often called OCR) is a process that identifies and "pulls out" printed text from a TIF or JPG image. Whenever you digitize an item with words on it -- a book, a newspaper, a pamphlet, a typed letter, business document, etc. -- using OCR enables MMP users to discover your item by searching for any word or phrase in it. We will go over how OCR works and what constitutes "good" vs. "poor" OCR quality. But the bulk of the hour will be spent walking through (1) activating an OCR license, (2) getting the correct settings in Project Client, and (3) uploading and OCRing some text documents to an MMP collection.

Aiming for a Robust Metadata Infrastructure for the Future (Association, Association for Library Collections & Technical Services)

The Library of Congress, the National Agricultural Library, and the National Library of Medicine have jointly determined that to achieve a viable and robust metadata infrastructure for the future, RDA—Resource Description & Access should be in that future. This decision was not made lightly, but based on a substantive test using RDA in which 23 libraries and the three U.S. national libraries participated. This webinar will share the thoughts of LC's Associate Librarian for Library Services, Deanna Marcum, and its Director for Acquisitions & Bibliographic Access, Beacher Wiggins. Marcum will give her reactions to reviewing and accepting the recommendations of the U.S. RDA Test Coordinating Committee. Wiggins, a Coordinating Committee co-chair, will describe the test, findings, and analyses that led to the recommendation to implement RDA not sooner than January 2013.

What's Happening with Genre Headings? (Nebraska Library Commission)

Genre headings can be very useful in library catalogs in order to let patrons search for particular types of items. In May of this year, the Library of Congress changed how its genre headings are handled, separating them from subject headings and establishing a separate thesaurus, the Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT). In this session, Emily Nimsakont, the NLC’s Cataloging Librarian, will give an overview of how genre headings are used and discuss the effects of this decision by the Library of Congress.
